3% pay rise for retail workers on 1 July

Retail workers covered by the General Retail Industry Award will receive a 3% pay increase on 1 July 2019.

The Fair Work Commission handed down its Annual Wage Review decision on 30 May 2019.

The Annual Wage Review occurs every year and determines any wage increases for workers on the minimum wage and on Modern Awards such as the General Retail Industry Award. The Commission assesses what is fair and reasonable and considers submissions from both employer groups and unions.

Each year, Australian Unions, including the SDA the union for retail workers, make a significant submission to the Annual Wage Review advocating for substantial pay rises for retail workers.

This work by unions in the Annual Wage Review is incredibly important as employer lobby groups such as the National Retail Association and the Australian Retail Association often call for minimal or no increase to wages at all.

New rates of pay will be published on this website on 1 July 2019.
