3.5% increase to retail wages from 1 July 2018

Australian retail workers covered by the General Retail Industry Award (Retail Award) will receive a 3.5% increase to their pay on 1 July 2018.

It’s important for retail workers to check payslips on the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2018 to make sure you’re receiving the right pay.

This wage increase was won by unions, including the SDA, the Union for retail and fast food workers.

The wage increase was determined by the Fair Work Commission earlier this year in the Annual Wage Review.

In the Annual Wage Review, the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), supported by unions across Australia, made a comprehensive submission calling for a significant increase to the minimum wage and wages in Modern Awards including the Retail Award.

In contrast, employer lobby groups argued against significant pay rises, with the National Retail Association calling for no increase at all.

While the SDA, the Union for retail and fast food workers, welcomes the 3.5% increase it recognises that it’s simply not enough as retail workers continue to face pressures of the rising cost of living.

That’s why SDA members across Australia continue to push for wages to go up each year.

SDA members stand up for improved pay in retail stores. If you think retail wages need to go up, become an SDA member today.
