New retail rates of pay from 1 July 2022

Do you work in retail? Check your next pay slip for a wage increase.

The Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review decision means new rates of pay will apply from 1 July 2022.

There will be a $40 per week increase to Modern Awards for workers earning up to $869.60 per week and a 4.6% increase to rates above that.

This pay rise was won by the SDA, the union for retail workers, and the broader union movement who ran a strong campaign to lift wages.

Increases to the minimum wage and Modern Awards like the General Retail Industry Award are determined by the Fair Work Commission in their Annual Wage Review.

Every year the Annual Wage Review looks at the current economic climate in Australia and also considers submissions from interested parties such as unions and employer lobby groups.

This year employer groups continued to argue for little or no increases and delaying wage increases.

The SDA opposed this as the cost of living continues to soar in Australia which is impacting workers across the country.

Cost of living pressures are here now so a delay to the wage increases for retail workers would have been unjust which is why the SDA campaigned for a decent wage increase.

This is a much needed increase for millions of workers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.
